Wrestling gets big victory over Farmington

Thursday, January 23, 2014

NEWINGTON — The Newington wrestling team likes challenges, and it got a huge one Wednesday night against Farmington, one of the best teams in the state.

The Indians were up to the test.

A misconduct point against a Farmington wrestler was the criteria used to break a 33-33 tie and give Newington a huge victory over Farmington.

The Indians were led by Andres Del Valle’s pin at heavyweight and a win by Dan DeWolf in the final match to capture the tie for Newington (7-1).

“We really respect Farmington and how good a team they are,” Newington coach Eric Soucy said. “We love wrestling good competition. The guys stepped up and took it to them. They put a lot of hard work into the match and it showed.”

Newington got some big major decisions which helped lead the Indians to the win.

Brian Goncalves at 138 and Christian Zotti at 152 had huge major decisions, as did Alex Skoneiczny at 160.

The gives Newington further evidence it can compete with the best in the state.

“It’s a big confidence booster for us,” Soucy said.
